Synopsis

Empress of the Eastern Nation Navier Ellie Trovi stands at the pinnacle of noblewomen with dignity and grace. Although she and her husband, Emperor Sovieshu, are not as intimate as other couples, their trust in each other has been built over years of friendship. But then, wanting something more, he brings in a concubine—a former slave named Rashta—and that is when everything begins to fall apart.

Months later, the fateful day arrives; Sovieshu declares his intentions to divorce Navier and give her throne to Rashta. However, against all expectations, Navier is not backed against a wall, and she declares her intention to marry another man—Heinrey—whose noble appearance shocks all in the room.

Just who is Heinrey, and how did Navier come to this new marriage arrangement? The Eastern Nation stands at a precipice, being torn apart by conspiracies, lies, and—above all—love.

The Remarried Empress is an adaptation of Alphatart's Jaehon Hwanghu web novel series. It is originally a webtoon series which has been officially published in book format by Young Com (영컴) since September 23, 2020.

The series has been published digitally in English by LINE Webtoon since September 6, 2020. The volumes have been published by Yen Press under the Ize Press imprint since November 22, 2022.

Look, usually I don't really write reviews (cause I'm lazy) but I really wanted to give a hand to this series. I was kind of confused as well as to why it's got so many bad reviews. Before reading this, I found the historical/royal genre tiring because the female lead almost always ends up becoming the damsel in distress, but the Remarried Empress stood out a lot to me. Empress Navier really does fit her role as a strong and dedicated leader, and she doesn't take crap from anyone, not even her cheating husband or his bratty mistress.

I think the problem with this webtoon (and more generally with all historical webtoons) is that it's really long. We have a prologue where it is announced that the empress is going to divorce her chapter and when we start the story, it takes 80 CHAPTERS for her to get divorced, something we already knew was going to happen. I understand the need for context and so on, but this was too much. And then, I find that there are too many plots started for the webtoon to end soon and I'm seriously starting to wonder if I'm going to continue reading it.

I think this isn't a popular opinion, but I can't enjoy this story at all. I also don't think Rashta is as bad as people say she is. If anything the Empress, if this was real life, would be the villain.

I started thinking this way when Rashta's origins were revealed and the characters reactions were appalling to say the least. No one was shocked or disgusted by the fact that slavery existed in their kingdom, not even the Empress our heroine, but instead saw it as an embarrassment for Rashta.
